How to Survive the Oncoming Catastrophe

It is hard to exist today without your life being tied up in your email. There are accounts and passwords. There are bills and payment records. There are treasured conversations with dear friends. Photos. History. Joys. Things that will lift you up. And things that can bite you. Lose your email and you lose part of your life.
Yet losing email is almost a certainty.

I’ve been in Information Technology a LONG time and one of the first things we learn (usually the hard way) is to back things up. Whilst saving vital emails and the parts of your life they represent used to be hard, at last there is an easy way – SaveMail.

Outlook saves all your email in one big “.pst” file. If it messes that up when writing one new email, you can lose the whole lot. You don’t have to figure out who the clients were, what they wanted, what we promised, and so on.
The more you use Outlook the bigger its “.pst” file gets. Not only does it fill up your computer but it slows it down too. Having to read through a huge file takes time. Adding something into the middle takes time. Moving email around in a big file can involve a lot of work. Old email, really old email, possibly should be kept (in some cases); but do you need to keep it on your computer or in that one huge “.pst” file? Probably not. With SaveMail you can move it out and put it away somewhere.
Everytime Outlook reads or “opens”; a “.pst” file it marks the file as modified. I have no idea why it would do this as it really defies all common sense. How this affects YOU is it wastes your time if you try to use normal backup software with email. If you try to back it up, your program is going to save the whole lot everytime, even though nothing has changed! With SaveMail, your email is stored in normal files and backing those up works like every other normal file – if it has been (really) changed, it gets backed up. Otherwise it can skip to the next item.
Sometimes you have related files that aren’t emails. Pictures, scans, documents, whatever. They could have been email attachments but weren’t. They’re just regular files; not email, but they’re related to a number of emails. Wouldn’t it be great if you could file the lot together? I would find it useful. Catch is, you can’t put regular files in your Outlook email folders. (There are ways around that and I have resorted to emailing documents to myself just to get them in email. But, it does waste resources – eg your upload / download quota – and sometimes you really don’t want to send private documents through the public internet.) With SaveMail you can turn this on its head. You can save the email with the documents instead of trying to turn documents into emails.
